Shea Butter

Ingredient Spotlight: Shea Butter

Shea butter is one of those ingredients you see listed in nearly every beauty product nowadays. In your shampoo, in your body moisturiser … it seems like a ‘buzz’ ingredient but is it really worth the hype?

What is it even?!

Shea butter is a solid fatty oil that comes from the nuts of a Karite tree.  It’s mainly found in Africa and comes in refined or unrefined states.  Just like another staple and life-love, chocolate, its purest form is raw. This is also the most natural and least processed type.

Because it’s extracted manually, it’s entirely possible to retain all those lovely vitamins, minerals and other beautiful natural elements that exist before human hands even touch it.

You can probably tell by now that we are indeed fans, and in fact use it as a moisturising base in all of our products. Yes, every single one.  That’s how much we love this ingredient!  Our very favourite thing about shea butter is the results it can give to your skin.

shea butter is…

The ultimate moisturiser!

It has such a high concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids which make it astonishingly moisturising and an impeccable smooth skin solution. It’s the perfect remedy for dry skin as it helps protect our skin’s natural oils. Hello hydration!

An antioxidant superpower!

We love anything antioxidant-rich, especially when it’s 100% natural. Shea butter contains plant-based antioxidants plus vitamins A and E which protect skin from free radicals to keep it nice and healthy.

Anti-ageing!

Because it is packed with vitamins A, E and F, shea butter stimulates the production of collagen – an essential protein in maintaining supple and radiant skin.  It also targets fine lines with linolenic, stearic and oleic acids. People who have been using shea butter for a long time usually talk about how their skin has become smoother over time and wrinkles have been held at bay.  Sounds good to me …

Ultra-healing!

In its most purest and unrefined form, shea butter is a complete superfood for the skin and has the ability to heal severely damaged dermal layers.  That’s because it contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can combat everything from rashes, scars, burns, insect bites and even eczema.

At Green Foot Mama, we really believe in holistically treating the skin whilst respecting nature and the world around us.  By using beautiful natural products we uphold these principles for our brand.  If you’re not already sold on this powerful hydrating and healing ingredient, we recommend you try one of our luxe balms.  They are all 100% organic and suitable for even the most sensitive skin types – and you guessed it, they all contain this amazine ingredient.
